Officially now rated as : BIBLICAL York & Leeds under water and the Lake District now known as the Lake. Is this going to become more common place?

A Co-Worker comes from a village that was hit first by the flooding a full week before the BBC reported it.
She said that as a child she used to play in the surrounding forests and woodland but over the years its all been cut down and as a result there is nothing to soak up the water coming down off the hills.

This is what happens when you build on flood plains.

Terrible for those poor people living in and around the floods. How do you come back from two floods one after the other it must be soul destroying.

It's because we give these storms names now, they seem to be getting uppity.

I live in the Lake District, right next to a fast flowing river
So far we've been really lucky, it's never flooded
A lot of the problem is made worse since the River Board (as it was then but now the Environment Agency) no longer maintain the rivers properly
There were about 20 full time River Board workers in our area 30 years ago, now there are none
They used to remove debris & reinforce river banks & do a sterling job
There is a large fallen tree in the river just downstream from me which I reported to the Environment Agency about 3 years ago & will cause a flood sooner or later
It's still there now!

The environment agency are more concerned about wildlife than peoples houses.

You are right about house locations.
The same co worker said that they filled an old pond in and had drainage put in and then built a small estate on the area last year.
The lot of it is under 6 ft of water as the drainage got blocked and it turned back in to a pond...
Millions worth of damage.

The Government should respond by upgrading the Thames Barrier.

"Here Comes The Flood"
By: Peter Gabriel / Robert Fripp / Brian Eno.
Intro sample is of a talk by JG Bennett. Got it wrong about a new "Ice Age" but prescient, nevertheless. Bennett was a fascinating man.

Jack. Dredging rivers doesn't stop floods, it just moves them further downstream. Plant trees on the hills, reforest the areas. That would be much better.

£38m was spent on the Carlisle flood defences after 2005 but more even properties were flooded this time around. Came over the top and backed the problems further up river where I live, massive waste of money trying to engineer a solution in the towns and cities.

I think land owners get massive EU subsidies to "manage" trees and scrub off their land under the guise of environmental improvement.
The correct response is, of course to plant more trees & other water retaining vegetation, and build all new houses at least 10 feet above the highest ever recorded floodline in any given area - and a big, fuck-off tax on all paved areas.

I swear I saw some local in one of tbe cumbrian villages the other week saying that they wanted to actually cut down the trees on the hillsides as its them that cause the blockages at bridges etc and cause the water to rise quicker. The government said no.

As if it's not bad enough already being northern, you then also get the worst of the countries weather.
Terrible at Christmas, though there is no good time for these things.
Thoughts are for everyone up there and let's just hope there are no deaths, as posessions can be replaced, life can't.
